The social and class divisions in early 20th century England through the intersection of three families – the wealthy Wilcoxes, the gentle and idealistic Schlegels and the lower-middle class Basts.

Young Rosemary Woodhouse and her husband Guy move in with a rich couple, who soon take an unusual interest in the Woodhouses’ attempts to have a second baby after Rosemary miscarried the first one.
